After submitting my master thesis and getting upset obtaining a major correction for my thesis and paper, I started to realize what a real research world is about: do not take it lightly. I learn to be more independent and confident. From a person who is afraid to try something new, I started to learn that working with new stuffs is fun and challenging. Despite facing difficulties at times, I thought they are actually the beauty of PhD. Besides, I have improved a lot in terms of communication: these days, I am no longer shy to speak in English.

AsianCardiac is a place where you would come across an amalgamation of researchers working over different extensions of the same branch. When I came here, I was thrilled by the enthusiasm of my peers and the level of comfort between a supervisor and the student. This experience has put aside my fear of doing something innovative independently. With my supervisors' constant guidance and support, I have learned to learn the state of the art equations and how to use them to derive my own to make something worthwhile in the field of science and call myself an accomplished researcher!

There are different sides to a research experience and one of the most important ones is the group you work in. In AsianCardiac which will start to feel like a second home to you after a while, the support needed for getting your work done in time is always there by the attentive and caring supervisors and knowledgeable colleagues. The multidisciplinary aspect of research here adds the excitement factor for motivation. I have had the opportunity to gain many valuable skills during my experience here all of which will be aiding me in future endeavors.

The one year of RAship has given me quite a strong foundation in the field of solid mechanics and finite element method. My DPhil requires me to understand in great detail the poroelastic theory, which requires strong understanding in the solid mechanics theory. Though I took about three months to understand the poroelastic theory, I managed to complete my first project within the first 6 months. Currently, I am progressing onapplying my model to the finite element analysis by using FEM softwares that I have never used before. With the experience I gained from the RAship, especially when using softwares like ADINA and COMSOL, I have managed to use the new software and got the results within just 2 months. I am really grateful with the experience I got from the one-year research.

Ong Chi Wei, Freelance Engineer
I am now working as a CFD freelancer, particularly in C programming and research project development. I am grateful for having a chance to do an MEngSc in UM, which mainly involved fluid structure interaction of left ventricular assist device and left ventricle. The multiphysics model allows me to explore the unlimited potential of computational fluid dynamics in biomedical instrument design. Mathematical skills and complex fluid dynamics theory I learnt in my master degree has equipped me to kick off my current research projects.

Ooi Hui Lee, Vision Development Engineer
Upon completion of my MEngSc, I joined TT Vision as a Vision Development Engineer. My job scope revolves around the design of image processing algorithms for automated visual inspection machine in industrial testing applications. The invaluable research skills as well as fundamental technical skills acquired throughout the course of my postgraduate study are highly beneficial to me in my current profession. Both the personal and professional growth I experienced within the research group had steered me towards better preparation for my career. The experience I had with Asian Cardiac Engineering group is one that I will always cherish as it was an enlightening journey endowed with research opportunities.

Along my PhD journey, I enjoy gaining new experience, skills and knowledge from time to time. In terms of project development, I have been coordinating clinical data collection, developing codes and models, as well as journal writing. Through these experiences, I have ample opportunity communicating with people from all walks of life as well as experts from different professions. Many thanks to my kind, knowledgeable and resourceful supervisors, as well as instant assistances from collaborators, I managed to turn every problem I faced into precious learning experience. The oversea attachment has also broadened my insight. It is my pleasure to be a part of this research group. For me, PhD journey is also considered as a training of self-disciplinary, time management, emotion control, perseverance and self-motivation.

I believe Asian Cardiac could provide a coalescence of eager and energetic interdisciplinary researchers working unified to realize the shared goal. Although I am not among the constituent but now am glad given the chance of working with talented student and a supportive supervisor. Asian cardiac not only provides a friendly environment but inspires you the spirit of innovation. As a Control Engineer first I realized a simplified CVS-RBP mathematical model then promoted it with non-invasive observer controller technique. Then I strode modelling by focusing on system identification and a successful estimator implementation; now I work on providing a new physiological based RBP controller hope could present it empowered with disturbance free robust controlling method. I should honestly confess that a continuous supervisor support and taking advantage of the latest laboratory instruments makes no way but progression.

Research is an adventurous and challenging path and full of uncertainties. Therefore, analytical thinking is required to troubleshoot and analyze the problem appears during the research, then only we can apply our knowledge to solve it. Being a part of this research team, I am able to get advice and supervisonfrom various experts in different fields, which enables me to proceed with the research with confidence and worry-free of the resources needed to analyze and carry out the research. Also, I was able to sharpen my critical and analytical thinking skills which is neccessary during the research.
